The ‘We Found Love’ songstress invited Oprah to her native country of Barbados to film the candid chat for a new episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter, during which she discussed her childhood, her incredible success and her relationship with abusive ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.
Chris brutally assaulted Rihanna in 2009 causing the end of their romance, but reports have mounted in recent weeks that they are reconciling. Rihanna says that is not the case and they are “very close friends.”
“We built a trust again and that’s it. We love each other and we probably always will,” Rihanna said through tears.
“We’ve been working on our friendship again and now we’re very close friends. And that’s not anything we’re going to try to change.”
Chris has moved on with new girlfriend Karrueche Tran, and Rihanna says it’s difficult to be around each other sometimes because she “still loves him.”
“It’s awkward because I still love him. My stomach drops and I have to maintain this poker face and not let it get to the outer part of me. I have to maintain it and suppress it.”
“When you don’t understand those feelings you can make a lot of mistakes.”
